2 French Slang Words for "Awesome": Lourd & Stylé
If the only word you have for "great" is génial, your French is missing the way young people actually talk. In my new video I give you two slang words that mean "it's awesome" — and one of them literally means "heavy". Here's how to use both, with the one trap that could make you say the exact opposite of what you mean.
The two words
- lourd — awesome / sick / dope (loor). Literally "heavy", but as slang it means something is impressive. C'est lourd !
- stylé — cool / classy / stylish (stee-lay). From style. C'est stylé !
In the video the example is a compliment on a t-shirt: Il est lourd ton tee-shirt and Il est stylé ton tee-shirt— "Your t-shirt is awesome / really cool." Notice the very spoken word order: the compliment first, then ton tee-shirt tacked on at the end.
How to use them
The easiest, safest pattern is with c'est, which never changes:
- C'est lourd ! — That's awesome!
- C'est trop stylé ! — That's so cool!
- Ta vidéo est stylée. — Your video is cool. (stylé agrees: stylée for a feminine noun)
stylé behaves like a normal adjective and agrees: stylé (m), stylée(f), stylés / stylées (plural). lourd as praise is most natural with c'est or about an object, and stays lighter on the agreement.
⚠️ The "lourd" trap
This is the one to remember. lourd means "awesome" about a thing — but about a person, il est lourdusually means the opposite: "he's annoying / heavy-going / a pain." So:
- Ce son est lourd ! — This track is awesome! ✅
- Il est lourd, lui… — He's such a pain… 😬 (said about a person)
The safe move: use lourd as praise only for things (a song, a video, an outfit), and reach for styléwhen you're complimenting a person or their look.

Once lourd and stylé feel natural, add these to your admiration toolkit: c'est ouf (crazy/amazing), ça déchire (it rocks), c'est le feu(it's fire), and the safe-everywhere c'est génial.
