Airplane Vocabulary in French: L'Avion
Airports are the one place where you cannot politely stall. Announcements come fast, signs are abbreviated, and staff are working through a queue. The good news: airport French is a closed set — perhaps forty words, always in the same order. Learn them in the order you meet them and the whole journey becomes readable.
1. Before you fly
- un vol — a flight · un aller simple — one way
- un aller-retour — return ticket
- réserver — to book · annuler — to cancel
- le décollage — take-off · l'atterrissage (m) — landing
- une escale — a stopover · une correspondance — a connection
2. At the airport
- l'enregistrement (m) — check-in
- le comptoir — the desk
- la carte d'embarquement — boarding pass
- les bagages à main — hand luggage
- les bagages en soute — checked luggage
- le contrôle de sécurité — security
- le contrôle des passeports — passport control
- la porte d'embarquement — the gate
- la salle d'embarquement — departure lounge
Two signs to know instantly: DÉPARTS (departures) and ARRIVÉES (arrivals).
3. On board
- le hublot — the window (not la fenêtre)
- le couloir — the aisle
- la ceinture de sécurité — seatbelt
- le coffre à bagages — overhead locker
- l'hôtesse de l'air / le steward — flight attendant
- le commandant de bord — the captain
- le plateau-repas — meal tray
- les turbulences (f) — turbulence
Asking for a seat: Je voudrais une place côté hublot (window) or côté couloir (aisle). Note je voudrais, not je veux — the conditional is doing the politeness work, as always.
4. Announcements, decoded
These are read at speed. Recognising the fixed phrase is enough:
- Embarquement immédiat porte 24. — Now boarding at gate 24.
- Dernier appel pour le vol AF1680. — Final call for flight AF1680.
- Le vol est retardé / annulé. — The flight is delayed / cancelled.
- Veuillez attacher votre ceinture. — Please fasten your seatbelt.
- Nous amorçons notre descente. — We are beginning our descent.
- Veuillez regagner votre siège. — Please return to your seat.
Veuillez + infinitive is the formal imperative used in every announcement in France. Spot it once and the rest of the sentence is just an instruction.
5. On arrival
- la livraison des bagages — baggage reclaim
- la douane — customs
- rien à déclarer — nothing to declare
- J'ai perdu ma valise. — I've lost my suitcase.
- Mon bagage n'est pas arrivé. — My luggage hasn't arrived.
Three false friends
- le hublot, not la fenêtre, for an aircraft window. Same word as a ship's porthole.
- un car is a coach, not a car. The airport shuttle bus is la navette.
- le contrôle means a check or inspection, not "control".
One sentence that solves most problems
Excusez-moi, je cherche la porte 24, s'il vous plaît ? — Excuse me, I'm looking for gate 24. Swap the last noun and it works for check-in, the toilets, the shuttle or baggage reclaim.
