French is very similar to English
The first thing to know is that French has many words that are similar to English. This means that if you already speak English, half of the work is already done when learning French. 😊
Let’s look at a few examples of similar words:
English word — French word
motivation — motivation
interest — intérêt
habit — habitude
joy — joie
simple — simple
These are just a few examples of the many similar words you will recognize when you start learning French.
So if you already speak English, you will often feel that French vocabulary is familiar and easier to remember as you begin your French learning journey. ✨
French grammar VS Thai Grammar
French grammar is a bit more complicated than Thai grammar. As a Thai learner, the most important thing is not to get discouraged when you start learning, because it can feel overwhelming at first.
Let’s look at a simple grammar example.
In Thai, when you say ฉันชอบ or คุณชอบ, the verb does not change. The verb ชอบ always stays the same.
But in French, verbs change depending on the subject.
For example:
ฉันชอบ → j’aime
คุณชอบ → tu aimes
You can already see a difference: the first one is aime, and the second one is aimes.
In French, verbs change form depending on who is doing the action. This is called verb conjugation.
And this is your first little French grammar lesson. 😊
Is French useful for Thai people?
You might then ask yourself: “Is it actually useful for me to learn French?”
Well, let’s take a look at this map of French-speaking countries around the world.

So as you can see, French is spoken in many different countries around the world. You will be able to use French in several places, whether in Africa or in the West, such as Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, and France.
I hope you learned a little bit about French today and that you will enjoy your French learning journey. 😊
